Worship At Saint James

SERVICES ARE HELD SATURDAY AT 5:00PM AND SUNDAY AT 8:00 AND 10:15

WHO CAN WORSHIP AT SAINT JAMES?

All are welcome regardless of age, race, nationality, belief, or sexual orientation.

WHERE DO I PARK FOR WEEK END SERVICES

* Free parking (up to 3 hours) is available on Sunday mornings in the Duke Street Parking garage.
* Metered and on-street parking is free on Saturdays and Sundays.
* Parking spaces along Cherry Street, behind the library and parish house, are leased by residential tenants and businesses, thus are not available for parishioner use. Please note that vehicles parked in these spaces may be towed.
* Parishioner parking is available on Saturdays and Sundays in the lot immediately east of 137 Marion Street.

ARE THE THREE SERVICES THE SAME?

No. The service at 5 p.m. on Saturday is a Contemporary Eucharist held in the Chapel, the 8 a.m. service on Sunday is a said service without music held in the chapel, and the 10:15 a.m. service with full choirs is held in the church. All are Rite II from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer.

WHAT IS THE FORMAT OF THE WEEKDAY SERVICES?

The weekday services (Morning Prayer, Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.; Noon Prayer M, T, W, F 12:05 P.M.; Evening Prayer, Monday-Thursday 5:30 p.m.) are led by lay volunteers and include readings from the scripture, prayer, and time for quiet meditation. The Thursday Healing Service with Eucharist, 12:05 p.m., is led by a member of the clergy.

WHICH SERVICES HAVE COMMUNION

All weekend services plus the Thursday Healing Service include the Celebration of the Holy Eucharist, Rite II.

WHAT IS A SACRAMENT?

A sacrament in the Episcopal Church is "an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual gift." The Church recognizes two major sacraments-baptism and the eucharist (also called communion)-and five sacramental rites-confirmation, ordination, marriage, reconciliation, and anointing.

WHO CAN RECEIVE COMMUNION?

All baptized Christians are warmly invited to receive Holy Communion at Saint James.

WHAT IS HOLY UNCTION?

The Rite of Holy Unction is the practice of prayer with anointing and laying on of hands. It is observed at Saint James during the service of Holy Eucharist at the 10:15 Sunday and the Thursday noon services. The participant comes to the Unction ministers at the altar with a request for personal prayers or prayers on behalf of another.

WHAT IS A CONTEMPORARY EUCHARIST?

At Saint James, the Folk Eucharists are simple, intimate services. The readings and the liturgy are the same as those used in the Sunday services, but the music tends to be more contemporary. The homily is less formal and sometimes takes the form of questions and answers. The congregation usually participates in singing at the offertory. The service concludes with the singing of "God be with you till we meet again."
