Saturday Night Grateful Dead Jazz Mass |
"The goals of the music ministry at Saint James are to integrate the worship program with the mission of the parish and to energize the congregation's worship life through dynamic music, prayer and ritual."
Ron Barnett - Director of Music
MUSIC AT ST. JAMES THROUGH THE YEARS
Music has been an important part of Saint James Episcopal Church from its beginning. As early as 1760, the Rev. Thomas Barton managed to collect 20 pounds sterling toward the purchase of a "small organ," and that was the beginning of the Saint James commitment to music in its own worship as well as for the benefit of the community at large.
Today, Saint James offers an incomparable breadth of music spanning many genres and centuries. On our concert series, solo artists and ensembles of local and international renown perform in the exquisite acoustic of our historic space.
From early music to world music, we perform and worship in ways that delight and inspire thousands of people every year. A given month will have a Talking Heads Mass on Saturday night and Choral Evensong from 1662 on a Sunday night. Sunday mornings are given to beautiful traditional worship with music from our deep sacred traditions from Medieval plainsong to gospel classics. Our concerts are often free and they are open to all.
